The Week the Passes Open

We ride in the first fortnight the snow gates lift, when the ploughed walls still stand either side of the road and the cols are almost empty. It is the best week of the year to be up there, and the one with the most weather in it.

The same route a fortnight later, with longer days of light, warmer descents and a much better chance that every col is clear. This is the departure to choose if you would rather not gamble on early-June snow, or if it is your first time riding at this altitude.
